Located in southwestern Guatemala in the Guatemalan Highlands. This lake is renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and is Guatemala's most important tourist attraction. The villages surrounding the lake still have a strong Mayan culture. These towns include San Pedro, San Juan, San Marcos, Santa Cruz, San Antonio, among others.

The Mayan culture is still strongly present in this area. Most people are Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel. Some of the towns surrounding the lake retain their Mayan name, like Panajachel. There are no roads that circle the lake. Instead, communities are connected by boat transportation or short roads that may connect one town to another. Places like Santa Cruz and Jaibalito can only be reached by boat. While some of these towns are larger, others are more residential.
